MT HOOD LOOP TOUR
THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2012
8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
$42.00 per person
View some of the most spectacular scenery in the Northwest from the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River Valley to Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood on today’s MT HOOD LOOP TOUR. Experience the grandeur of the Columbia River Gorge in one of the world's most magnificent landscapes. Designated a National Scenic Area, the Gorge will engage you with its compelling vistas, hanging valleys, terraced cliffs, fantastic rock pinnacles, and enchanting waterfalls. Visit the most impressive of these, Multnomah Falls, which at 620 feet is the fourth highest in the United States. Explore the Falls visiting the displays at the outdoor interpretive center; stopping in at the gift shop for a souvenir; taking a short 1/4-mile walk along the paved trail to the historic Benson arch bridge for a closer look, or just standing at the base of the Falls and reveling in their splendor.
Then continue along the mighty Columbia River to Bonneville Dam or Bonneville Fish Hatchery. At the Dam see fish migrating through underwater fishways, learn about the Dam's operations, navigational history and fish migration through the numerous educational exhibits, or at the Fish Hatchery visit the display ponds that hold adult white sturgeon (some measuring more than 6 feet long,) see Fall Chinook and Coho spawning, and large Rainbow Trout. Enjoy lunch on your own in the town of Hood River at one of the many restaurants that line the street of this windsurfing capitol.
Following lunch we'll travel through the Hood River Valley, past apple and pear orchards, into the Mt. Hood National Forest to Timberline Lodge, located at the 6,000-foot elevation on Mt. Hood. Tour this huge stone castle built by the Works Project Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression is the grandest example of Cascadian architecture. Inside and out, from its massive beams to hand-woven draperies, the lodge and furnishings are completely handmade and inspired by pioneer, Native American, and wildlife themes. And on a clear day enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Jefferson, the surrounding Cascade Mountain Range. Our day’s adventure comes to an end as we return to Portland past peaceful trout streams, and through several small towns...
